Bone China, High-White, Strengthened and Stoneware: The Real Differences

Two white bowls can differ tenfold in price. This guide separates the four main dailyware families by recipe, firing and verifiable indicators — and explains why “new bone china” is not bone china, and how national standards let you check a supplier's claim.

What separates the four families is what goes into the recipe: bone china adds herbivore bone ash for tricalcium phosphate; strengthened porcelain adds alumina and magnesia; high-white porcelain relies on purification and proportioning; stoneware uses higher-iron clay fired dense but opaque. Recipe sets the firing schedule, and firing sets strength, translucency and price.

The hard line on bone china: at least 36% tricalcium phosphate

“Bone china” is not a marketing term; it has a national standard. The current GB/T 13522-2024 was issued 31 December 2024 and took effect 1 July 2025. It covers dailyware whose principal constituent is tricalcium phosphate and requires no less than 36% of it in the fired body, converted from bone-ash content as Wc = 2.1853 Wp. In practice, bodies generally need above 40% bone ash to deliver high whiteness and translucency; internationally, fine bone china sits around 40–45%, and above 45% forming becomes extremely difficult. The bone ash itself is refined: steam-degreased at 900–1000°C, calcined at 1100–1250°C, then ball-milled, washed, acid-treated, de-ironed and dried to roughly 98% tricalcium phosphate. Measuring that content in the fired body is the only reliable test — not how thin or how white the piece looks.

“New bone china” is not a new kind of bone china

A category marketed as “new bone china” often undercuts high-white porcelain on price. It is essentially a high-white porcelain with slightly elevated calcium oxide, which gives some translucency — but no natural bone ash is added, and tricalcium phosphate falls short of the national standard. Three checkable differences: raw materials (bone china carries 40%+ bone ash, this does not); firing (bone china requires two firings, this is usually single-fired); and appearance (bone china reads softer in whiteness, more translucent and lighter in hand). The word “new” carries no standardised meaning, so ask for a tricalcium phosphate test report.

Five checks you can run without instruments

With a sample in hand, these checks quickly rule out obvious mismatches, though none replaces a test report. Backlight it: bone china transmits strongly and softly, and a finger outline shows faintly through. Tap the rim: bone china rings clear and long, ordinary porcelain sounds short. Weigh it: at equal size bone china is noticeably lighter. Read the colour: bone china is naturally cream, sometimes faintly yellow — a stark cold white usually is not bone china. Check the backstamp: legitimate ware carries maker, material, standard number and size marking per GB/T 3302.
